Trauma Therapy

What is trauma and do i have it?

Traumatic experience is unique to every person. Some people have had multiple traumatic experiences throughout a lifetime (growing up in a home with alcohol abuse), others have had a single experience that was significantly traumatic (a car accident). People may have a minor traumatic experience (a dog bite) that they think they should be able to resolve on their own, but it affects them in unexpected ways, and they are unable to “get over it.” Some people in these categories are able to process the experiences without specialized therapy, but not everyone is the same. Therapy designed to reprocess traumatic memories might be helpful if you believe you have suffered trauma. Some traumatic memories get “stuck” and continue to affect our lives and relationships even decades after the event.

I have helped people resolve traumatic memories related to recent and childhood events. I rely on several therapeutic modalities to work with memories related to trauma. The first is EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing). This is an evidence based method that has proven successful for many clients and you can learn more about it here: https://www.emdria.org/about-emdr-therapy/. The next is an “innovation” to EMDR which is called Flash Technique - https://flashtechnique.com/wp/. Some people and types of trauma respond better to Narrative Exposure Therapy and more information about this therapy can be found here - https://www.vivo.org/wp-content/uploads/2015/09/Narrative_Exposure_Therapy.pdf.

Beginning trauma therapy can feel intense and challenging, but clients report “life changing” results and experience a sense of progress and movement after years of feeling “stuck.”

Therapy for trauma might require 75 to 90 minute sessions and the fee schedule will vary from the fees for individual therapy.
